Ganesh Joshi, originally from Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, was born in 1958 in the city of Meerut, where his father Late Shri Shyam Dutt Joshi was posted as a constable in the Indian Army. The second eldest of five siblings, he spent his childhood in Meerut, Haridwar and Dehradun. He served as a soldier in the Indian Army from 1976 to 1983.
