About of Ladi Kwali
Ladi Dosi Kavali was born around 1925 in a family of potters in Kwali, Abuja, Nigeria. His aunt taught him how to crumble and pinch pottery as a child, which Cavalli later refined in his style as he sculpted everyday containers embellished with animal figurines. The local elite soon displayed their exquisite work as home decoration, and it was in a royal palace that Michael Cardue, the founder of Abuja’s first potter training facility, discovered his talent in 1950.
He was born in the small village of Kavali, which is the current Kavali Territory Council of the Federal Capital Territory, in 1925 (other historians say his date of birth is actually 1920). She grew up in a family that maintained the folkloric female tradition of pottery making. Ladi Kavali’s younger brother Mallam Mekaniki Kaybi said; “Even in the early years of pottery-making, Ladi Cavalli excelled in the craft and her wares were often sold before being taken to markets”.
