Narendra Modi was born on 17 September 1950 in a Gujarati Hindu family of grocers in Vadnagar, Mehsana district, Bombay State (present-day Gujarat). He was the third of six children born to Damodardas Moolchand Modi (c.1915–1989) and Heeraben Modi (born c.1920). [a] Modi’s family was from Modh-Ghanchi-Teli (oil-presser). community, classified as an Other Backward Class by the Government of India. Mayawati falsely accused him of adding her caste to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list as a political tool.
As a child, Modi is said to have helped his father sell tea at the Vadnagar railway station, and is said to later run a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus. Modi completed his higher secondary education in Vadnagar in 1967, where a teacher described him as an average student and a keen debater with an interest in theatre. Modi had an early gift for rhetoric in debate, and was noticed by his teachers and students. Modi preferred to play larger-than-life characters in theatrical productions, which influenced his political image.
At the age of eight, Modi was introduced to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and started attending its local shakhas (training sessions). There, Modi met Laxmanrao Inamdar, better known as Vakil Saheb, who inducted him into the RSS as a balswayamsevak (junior cadet) and became his political mentor. While Modi was training with the RSS, he also met Bharatiya Jana Sangh leaders Vasant Gajendragadkar and Nathalal Jaghra, founding members of the BJP’s Gujarat unit in 1980.
In the traditional custom of Narendra Modi’s caste, his family engaged a girl, Jashodaben Chimanlal Modi, whom he married at the age of 17 and at the age of 18. Soon after, he left. His bride, and left home, the couple leading separate lives, neither remarried, and for several decades in Modi’s public announcements. was not mentioned. In April 2014, shortly before the national elections that brought him to power, Modi publicly confirmed that he was married and that his wife was Jashodaben; The couple remained married, but separated.
Modi spent the next two years traveling to northern and north-eastern India, although few details have emerged about where he went. In interviews, Modi describes Hindu ashrams founded by Swami Vivekananda: Belur Math near Kolkata, followed by the Advaita Ashram in Almora and the Ramakrishna Mission in Rajkot. Modi was short-lived in each, as he lacked the required college education. Vivekananda has been described as a major influence in Modi’s life.
Modi reached Belur Math in the early summer of 1968, but was refused, after which Modi traveled to Calcutta, West Bengal and Assam, stopping at Siliguri and Guwahati. Modi then went to the Ramakrishna Ashram in Almora in 1968–69 and then returned to Gujarat via Delhi and Rajasthan, where he was again rejected. In late 1969 or early 1970, Modi returned to Vadnagar for a brief visit before leaving again for Ahmedabad. There, Modi lived with his uncle, working in the canteen of the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation.
