In terms of pedagogy, Freire is known for his attack on the “banking” concept of education, in which students are seen as empty accounts filled in by teachers. He notes that “it turns students into receiving objects [and] attempts to control thinking and action, prompting men and women to adjust to the world, suppressing their creative power.”
The original critique was not entirely novel, and was similar to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s concept of children as active learners, as opposed to a tabula rasa approach similar to the banking model. It was described as a mechanism stating that education is the regulation of the process of coming to participate in social consciousness; and the adjustment of individual activity on the basis of this social consciousness is the only sure way of social reconstruction.
