Claudia Johns was born on 21 February 1915. He was a journalist activist in Jan in Trinidad and Tobago. He moved to America with his family as a child. There he became a political activist for feminism and a black president. There he was named John. He was exiled in 1955 because of the political persecution of the Communists in America. He later moved to the United Kingdom. On reaching the UK, he joined the Communist Party.
After this, he remained a member of this party for the rest of his life. In addition, he founded the West Indian Gazette which played a central role in the founding of the world’s second largest annual Notting Hill Carnival.
